Learn to Make Sushi!

Saki (map)

Selected By: Kelly B

*** It's a great day to learn, eat, and enjoy Sushi! See you there! ***

UPDATE #4: We will be meeting upstairs.

UPDATE #3: If you were unable to secure a spot for this event online, you have the option of "flying standby." There are usually 5 no-shows for this event, so you just might be able to get on board. Make sure to come early with exact cash.

UPDATE #2: The chef has expanded the menu for us! See menu below in the event description.

UPDATE #1: There are only 20 early bird spots left and the price will increase from $40 to $50 before Sunday, March 14th. To be fair to those who want to join in and are ready to make payment, I'll be removing those that haven't paid by Monday, March 8th. So make payment to *truly* lock in your spot.

Ok, let's eat!... and learn how to make sushi!

We have a fun class planned with this one! Come join us at Saki for a 3 hour demonstration where chef Batzorig Baldengombo will take us through the culinary exploration of sushi cuisine.

Not only that:

  • We will have 3 "rounds" of cooking, where each round demonstrates the preparation and cooking of a different dish.
  • We'll each get to enjoy and eat ALL the dishes we just learned and demonstrated to us!
  • We'll each receive copies of the recipes, detailing the preparation of the dishes demonstrated to us
  • We'll all receive a $15 gift certificate to Saki!

The class outline / menu will be as follows:

1. Basic sushi rice use and preparation
2. Basic California roll preparation as base for specialty rolls
3. Demonstration of nigiri

  • Salmon nigiri
  • White tuna nigiri
  • Tamago nigiri
4. Demonstration of specialty rolls
  • Lasagna - Tempura shrimp with kani kami and spicy sauce
  • Adams Morgan - Spicy tuna tempura fried and covered in shredded lettuce
  • Saki Maki - California roll layered with salmon, tuna, and avocado

We've got an early bird special for this event of $40! The first 40 paid sign-ups, or those who pay before Sunday, March 14th (whichever comes first) get the early bird price! After that, the ticket price will go to $50. We have a LIMITED number of spots so make sure to RSVP early and make payment to get the early bird price!

Come join us, tell a friend, and let's learn, eat, and enjoy all about sushi together! =)

Hope to see you there!

- Kelly

P.S. Please know this is a DEMONSTRATION cooking class, rather than a "hands-on" class (which is much more expensive). Also, wine and drinks are not included in the ticket price, so you will need to purchase on your own.

Closest Metro is a 15 min walk from Woodley Park/Adams Morgan (Red Line), I suggest metro / cabbing it (esp. during rush hour). I also recommend using wmata for travel plans.

Thank you for the feedback! This was the first time we had gone with a class at Saki and I think they were nervous and not very sure how to set up something like this. I also had a difficult time getting any recipes and menu items from the chef so I had to do my best to put them together.
I did give five extra minutes for people to get there because I know parking and driving in Adams Morgan is very difficult. Overall, we saw what needed improving and we can implement in the future.

This was my first experience with a Meet up event and I was underwhelmed and left early. The host Kelly was friendly and thankfully she walked around about an hour into the event to sort of break the ice and get folks chatting. The event started 20 minutes late with the explanation being to wait for those with parking issues. I am fine with starting 5 or 10 minutes late but after that it just becomes rude for those that made it on time. I've been to other sushi demo's and this one just was not setup in a way so that we could see or hear the instructor well. Once these issues get worked out, it could be a fun event there.
